Play-off referees, away goals and sub rules confirmed for Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest will have Premier League referees in charge for their two-legged play-off semi-final against Sheffield United. The Reds travel to Bramall Lane for the first leg on Saturday before the second leg at the City Ground on Tuesday.

Neither side could be separated when they met during the regular season with both games between the two teams ending 1-1. The Blades finished five points and one place behind Steve Cooper's side in the Championship table this season.

Forests reward for a stellar campaign is a place in the play-offs for the first time since 2011. They face a Sheffield United team who clinched their play-off place on the final day with a thumping 4-0 win over runaway champions Fulham.

The first leg will be overseen by Andre Marriner, who has not been in charge of a game featuring either side this season. Michael Oliver will then be the referee for the second leg and will also be taking charge of his first game of the campaign for either side.

It has been decided that VAR (video assistant referee) technology will not be used for the play-off semi-finals. But it will be in operation for the final at Wembley on Sunday, May 29.

The away goals rule is also not in effect for the play-off semi-finals. If both teams are level on aggregate at the end of the second leg, it will go to extra time and, if necessary, be decided on penalties.

As with all other Championship games this season, sides will be permitted to make up to three normal substitutions during the regulation 90 minutes, concussion subs notwithstanding. But if the tie goes to extra time, each team will be permitted to use an extra substitute during the additional 30 minutes.
