Plans to revamp historic Longford Park set to be unveiled

Multi-million pound plans are on the way to revamp Longford Park in Stretford. Those living nearby can view the proposals and have their say on them tomorrow (Saturday May 28) at a gathering in the park itself.

Trafford council has been working on huge plans for a major regeneration of the historic Stretford Park, conservation area and the former home of John and Enriqueta Rylands.

The proposals will be funded by a multi-million pound development grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Residents can give their views on the latest plans as part of the project and multi-million pound funding bid.

A draft masterplan has been prepared in partnership with the Friends of Longford Park, local stakeholders, environmental charity City of Trees and lead project consultants The Environment Partnership (TEP), which people will be able to view at the park tomorrow.

Proposals include the refurbishment of and new uses for park buildings, including the former Longford Hall site, restoration of the park landscape and gardens, the reintroduction of Longford Brook through the park at surface level as well as revamped play and sports facilities.

There are also plans for volunteering, training and learning opportunities in the park.

Coun Liz Patel, Trafford council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: “This is an exciting milestone for the project. We know that parks play an important role in keeping people healthy and active and provide a space for nature in our urban environment.

“Longford Park has been a popular destination for generations, this support from the National Lottery gives us an important opportunity and we want to hear a wide range of views on future plans for this much loved space.”
