Plans to extend Old Trafford using yet more debt causing uproar among fans

Plans for an extension at Old Trafford have caused upset among some Manchester United fans. Reds supporters have taken to Twitter calling on Trafford council to block any application.

Their pleas are understood to be due to feelings towards owners the Glazer family and debt the club carries. Anti-Glazer sentiment among fans has raged for years, with regular protests held outside Old Trafford on match days.

The club has announced its intention for an extension to Old Trafford’s Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. The move would increase capacity to around 88,000. It is estimated the work could cost more than £200m.

In a series of tweets, Twitter user CandyCrush said: “Trafford council, there should be no granting of an application for Old Trafford expansion. “Trafford council have no right to grant [them] a licence to expand Old Trafford.”

Twitter user LUHG added: “Bro we’re screwed financially.” Mr Chaudhuri said: “We will be neck-deep in debt by the time we would be fighting relegation. A long, painful ride ahead.”

Patrick MUFC said: “Blowing two-years transfer budget to get 10,000 more seats.” Lee Harrison said: “In terms of capacity we are already second only to Wembley.”

Twitter user Focus added: “Everyday they bring up developing the stadium, you hear less and less areas getting worked on. Before it was moving the stadium, now it’s adding just 8,000 seats. How is that developing?”

A spokesperson for Trafford council said: “Any planning application to Trafford council will be decided in due course through the planning committee process.”

Manchester United did not respond to requests for comment.
