A £28million scheme to build 162 energy-efficient houses and apartments in Old Trafford is soon to be put before planning bosses - if a grant from Homes England can be secured. The joint venture between Trafford council and Trafford Housing Trust (THT) - including 30 per cent affordable homes - will be complete in the summer of 2025.
Councillors on the authority's executive committee approved the 'Homes for Old Trafford' scheme at an executive meeting on Wednesday night (October 12). A similar 'Tamworth Development' scheme for 174 homes was brought forward last year, but the proposals has been modified to accommodate fewer properties.
In July, the council was awarded nearly £2.4million from the Brownfield Housing Fund to support the delivery of the scheme. A report to the committee by Coun Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration, said: "The council is committed to tackling the shortage of housing in Trafford."
It said that the scheme in Bold Street, Old Trafford would make a 'meaningful contribution' to the council's housing targets. A planning application is expected to be submitted soon following the executive's approval last night.
An initial consultation was undertaken with immediate neighbours in February and March followed by another in July by the newly established Homes for Old Trafford board. The report said 1,200 leaflets were distributed to residents and businesses in the area and 'a clear majority of respondents supported the proposals and are fully behind the regeneration of the site to provide much-needed low-carbon housing'.
It is expected the planning application will be decided upon in January prior to a start date of March 2023, subject to approval. The target date for completion is June 2025.
Coun James Wright told the committee: "I welcome this development. It will provide affordable housing and sustainable homes, reducing energy bills. I look forward to this, post planning [the planning application process]."
However, council leader Coun Andrew Western emphasised that the scheme can 'only be approved if a grant from Homes England is approved'.
