Lothian residents might soon have a peculiar new neighbour as plans for a new cattery in South Queensferry are submitted.
The plans for the new development have been submitted to the City of Edinburgh council and are currently making their way through the planning process. The proposed cattery would provide shelter to cats and provide local rescue groups and vet practises an overspill facility.
The new cattery would be found in Dundas Home Farm, South Queensferry. However, the land is currently classified as Green Belt and is currently too small to be of use to the rest of the farm commercially.

The people proposing the development have previously run a cattery in Edinburgh and feel that the location is perfect for caring for other cats with its position in the country. They also say that, with the average stay being just a week, it won’t put a strain on the small road to the farm.
In their cover letter, the applicants said: “It is understood that there are no Boarding Catteries in South Queensferry and with the large increase in housing expansion there is a need for such a facility.
“There is no suitable land for sale or lease or property in the town itself and this site gives the opportunity to allow a short less stressful journey for any animal, which is one of the most important considerations for a cattery location. The site is peaceful, large enough to position the Cattery away from the road and to ensure that the animals are not stressed with traffic or domestic noise.
“The proposal is well set back from the street and is shielded by a significant hedge. Further planting will add to the shielding of the cattery once it has been erected. The cattery itself will be faced with a timber membrane to help it blend into the background. It will have very little effect on the character of the area in its build, sighting and traffic journeys/parking
“The proposers have previously owned and run a cattery within the Edinburgh area with a country setting and found this to be a great advantage when caring for other cats.
“The site will provide a vital and needed care facility for pet cats. It will also allow for local rescue groups or even vet practices to have an overspill facility. It will provide employment for at least two people all year round.”
