Plans for a new multi-million pound school in Merthyr Tydfil

There are plans to build a new multi-million-pound primary school in Merthyr Tydfil to replace a current Gurnos school. The council is consulting with with parents, staff, governors, and pupils about plans for the new school to replace Goetre Primary School which the council said is currently in a poor state of repair.

The new school will be located less than half a mile away from the current site on land below Pen Y Dre High School. It will have a multi-use games area (MUGA), community facilities, and childcare.

It will be jointly funded by the council and Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning programme. People are being asked what they would like the council to consider when designing the new school and what community facilities they would like included on the site.

There are parent drop-in sessions at Goetre Primary School on Tuesday, November 22, from 3pm until 5pm and on Wednesday, November 23, from 3pm until 5pm. There will be a community drop-in session at Calon Las Community Hub on Tuesday, November 29, from 3pm until 5pm.

More consultation with the community will take place before the plans are finalised over the coming months, the council said. Councillor Michelle Jones, the cabinet member for education at the council, said: “The current environment for teaching and learning isn’t suitable for a 21st century curriculum and many facilities are in need of being updated.

“The school buildings are not accessible for pupils, staff, or visitors who are wheelchair users and is not compliant with the Equalities Act 2010. A modern state-of-the-art teaching and community facility is needed for the benefit of all the pupils who attend Goetre, their families, and the wider Gurnos community.”
