Plans for 122 new Edinburgh homes in controversial masterplan approved

Plans for over a hundred new homes, sitting in a highly-debated neighbourhood in the west of Edinburgh have been approved.

The development, from Cruden Homes, will form a new community between Barnton and The Gyle. Once completed, West Craigs should include at least 1,700 new homes, a new primary school, nursery, health centre, cafe, parkland and woodland, as well as a network of cycle routes.

The community is positioned in the suburb of Maybury, with Cruden’s 4.25 acre site overlooking green space at the newly-formed Lennie Park, as well as being within walking distance of the Cammo Estate. Previous plans in the West Craigs area have been branded 'disgraceful', with locals pushing to save their green spaces.

Just last month, local councillor hailed the rejection of similar proposals in the West Craigs masterplan, stating: "A great victory for all those who campaigned so hard to protect this important green space in the west of Edinburgh."

Cramond and Barnton Community Council led calls for the plans to be rejected, saying they were 'contrary to current and emerging planning policies'. Arguing 'enough is enough', the group said with over 2,500 houses being built at Cammo and Maybury the area has already experienced 'loss of valued greenbelt, landscapes and habitat'.

Designed by ISA Architecture & Design, this newly approved range of energy-efficient new homes features one, two and three-bedroom apartments, many with balconies, along with three and four-bedroom terraced and semi-detached houses and townhouses, all with private gardens. The development will also provide communal electric vehicle charging points and break out garden spaces with BBQ and seating areas.

Fraser Lynes, managing director of Cruden Homes said: “The availability of quality new housing remains scarce, so we are delighted to bring these desirable new homes to the market and be part of this fantastic, growing new community, right on the fringes of the Capital.

“West Craigs offers home buyers the best of both worlds, with a wealth of amenities on the doorstep surrounded by an abundance of green space and only fifteen minutes from the city centre.”

Work is due to start on site this spring and the first phase of homes is anticipated to be completed by early 2024.
