Dramatic footage shows a plane bursting into flames at Miami International Airport as it come in to land.
The aircraft, which according to social media users was arriving from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, reportedly had a faulty landing gear that caused it to crash land, but this has not been confirmed.
The terrifying scene shows fire crews move swiftly to tackle the blaze by dousing the plane in foam.
Reports suggested that the plane hit a communications tower and a small building after landing before finally coming to stop in a grassy area.
Initial reports on Twitter suggested that the flight's passengers had been able to exit the plane safely, with only a handful suffering minor injuries.
It is not clear whether the issue with the landing gear happened during the flight or as the aircraft landed.
US-based journalist Moshe Schwartz said on Twitter: “Reports of a plane – arriving from Santo Domingo at Miami International Airport – has caught on fire after its landing gear collapsed.
“Four people have minor injuries per reports, after the Red Air civilian airliners landing gear collapsed causing a fire to break out. 126 people, including 11 crew members were on board.”
Twitter user and WPLG Local 10 News reporter Janine Standwood shared a video clip showing panicked passengers leaving the plane.
The video, which appeared to be taken by a man who had been sitting in economy class, showed him pushing a small cabin-sized case in front of him as he followed a queue of people walking down the aisle of the plane.
He was ushered out by a member of the plane's cabin crew, and onto an inflatable emergency chute leading from the aircraft to the ground.
The man appeared to pick up his suitcase before sliding down to the tarmac below.
He then panned around to show people running over the tarmac away from the plane, which had thick grey smoke billowing from its back end.
Sharing images and video of the scene, Twitter user @Duardy_Estrella said: “They tell me that this plane with Dominicans and Venezuelans landed in an emergency in Miami.
“Apparently it had problems with the landing gear and landed on its underside. Everyone safe I'm told!”
Another video shared by Twitter user @LetItShine69 captured more dramatic scenes of the plane, which appeared to be engulfed in black smoke.
Both screams and sirens could be heard from the scene, while people could be seen walking and running from the aircraft, some with their luggage and some without.
The flight, reported to be Red Air flight 203, made the emergency landing at approximately 5.30pm on Tuesday local time.
The incident has led to the closure of runways nine and 12 at the airport, affecting other flights.
Red Air is a Dominican-Venezuelan company and was only launched in December last year.
