Pizza restaurants ordered to improve after one star food hygiene ratings

Major improvements are necessary at two Liverpool pizza places according to health inspectors.

Liverpool Council has slapped damning ratings on Mo’s Pizzeria on Stanley Park Avenue South and Rio Pizza on Queens Drive after visiting the two venues in February and March. As a result, both locations have been deemed to have “major improvement necessary” and received a one out of five mark.

During its inspection two months ago, Mo’s Pizzeria was found to need an overhaul of its management of food safety, including “system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.” This was replicated during a visit to Rio Pizza in March.

Both venues were said to need to improve their hygienic food handling process, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage. Of the two, Mo’s Pizzeria was described as needing to make improvements to its cleanliness and condition of the facilities while Rio Pizza was deemed to be “generally satisfactory”.

Online, Rio Pizza claims to be “just the place” for traditional pizza and said “you can't go wrong.” The low ratings are the latest in a series of poor scores for takeaways and restaurants across Liverpool, with locations in Anfield and Warbreck also coming in for criticism from environmental health officials.

A restaurant in Garston that received a zero rating in March has been able to turn around its fortunes in just a matter of weeks. Should either venue seek to challenge the ratings, they are able to appeal the decision.

The businesses will first need to contact Liverpool Council for a breakdown of why the low rating was awarded. If this is still felt to be wrong or unfair, management can appeal to the FSA in writing to challenge the decision. A right to reply will also be published on the FSA website alongside its rating.

The ECHO contacted Mo's Pizzeria and Rio Pizza for comment.
