Piers Morgan says he would have slapped Alex Beresford if he hadn't stormed off GMB set

Piers Morgan has said that he would have slapped Alex Beresford if he hadn't stormed off Good Morning Britain last year.

The former GMB host, who quit the programme after ITV bosses called on him to apologise for comments he made about disbelieving Meghan Markle's claims in her Oprah interview, took to Twitter to give his opinion on the shocking moment Will Smith smacked Chris Rock live on air.

The actor, who won an Oscar just minutes after the incident, stormed the stage after Chris made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair.

Coming to Will's defence, Piers blasted the "snowflakery bulls***" and said that he probably would have "done the same".

He tweeted: "So much snowflakey bullsh*t re Oscars smackdown. You can think Will Smith wrong to slap Chris Rock but still understand why he did it if he thought - incorrectly - Rock was deliberately mocking his wife’s alopecia in front of a gazillion people. I’d have probably done the same."

A rather sceptical follower shared a screen grab of the famous moment he walked off GMB and tweeted: "Course you would!"

Piers quote tweeted the remark and wrote: "Ironically, I walked out to stop myself slapping him…"

Many other Twitter users weren't too impressed, however, with one writing: "Not something to be proud of frankly Free speech is cherished by Piers as long as you agree with what he is saying."

Another remarked: "Just because you can understand why he did it doesn’t make doing it right. He should have walked away. Or go back stage and talk to him."

ITV weatherman Alex had appeared on GMB after getting embroiled in a Twitter row with Piers following the host's comments about Meghan.

However, it all went downhill when Alex called his behaviour "absolutely diabolical" and said that Meghan was "entitled to cut [Piers] off".

Piers stood up and walked off saying that he was "done with this" and "couldn't do this" - though he did eventually return to set.

Will has since issued a grovelling apology for his behaviour on Sunday, writing on social media: "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.

"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world."
