Piers Morgan marks anniversary of sudden ITV Good Morning Britain walk-out before teasing 'uncensored' new TV show

Piers Morgan has marked a year since he stormed off ITV Good Morning Britain before leaving the programme permanently.

The TV presenter and journalist received a huge backlash to comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex following her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Then on the following day's episode back in March 2021, Piers became embroiled in a heated debate after he refused to believe claims from Meghan Markle's during her tell-all interview with Oprah alongside husband Prince Harry.

The show's weatherman Alex Beresford confronted Piers over his comments about the Duchess of Sussex when he dismissed her claims that she suffered suicidal thoughts and struggled with her mental health after joining the royal family.

The row, in which Alex told Piers his behaviour towards Meghan was 'absolutely diabolical', caused Piers to storm off the set and hours later, his exit from the ITV news programme was announced.

His swift exit came after his rant about Meghan's comments on the ITV news programme received the most complaints to Ofcom in a decade - with more than 57,000 people lodging a complaint.

However, six months after the episode in question, Ofcom said that GMB was not in breach of the broadcasting code over Piers' comments about the Duchess of Sussex’s interview with the US chat show host.

Taking to social media early on Wednesday morning (March 9), Piers shared a snap of the moment he walked out of the studios and said: "A year ago today, I went for a little stroll… and in the words of Edith Piaf, je ne regrette rien! #LongWalkToFreedomOfSpeech."

Piers' son was among the firs to comment on the Instagram post, writing: "The moment morning TV died."

And many fans were also commenting.

"I’ve not watched morning TV since," '@bec3030 claimed.

@jacquie_tolan_smith echoed: "The day I stopped watching Good morning."

"Still wishing you would stroll right back," @lana_b_kind commented.

@lynatkinsonuk wrote: "We miss you ..the show is not the same."

Although not everyone agreed with Piers' fans.

@julie_shanks tweeted: "We can listen to what the guests have to say without constant interruptions now. They are allowed to talk and then are replied to."

"I've started watching @GMB since that day, good riddance," @cumbaccountant scathingly replied.

@justjojo202 said: "A year ago today you stropped off stage because someone disagreed with you, you mean?"

"You were doing great against this Government and holding them to account, fighting for the people, I just wished you had left Meghan alone, that's all," @Moviemadnan added.

To further mark the occasion, Piers launched a scathing attack on GMB as he vowed to 'cancel cancel culture' in a teaser for his new TV show.

In the short clip, he was shown watching the moment he stormed off GMB, before addressing the camera: "A year ago today, I was forced to leave a job that I loved at the peak of its success for having the audacity to express an honestly held opinion. Well this shouldn’t happen in any democracy supposedly built on the principles of free speech and freedom of expression.

"So I’m delighted to now be returning to live television with a new prime-time show whose main purpose will be to cancel cancel culture which has infected societies around the world.

"I want it to be a platform for lively, vigorous debate, the newsmaking interviews, and that increasingly taboo three-letter word – fun. I also want it to annoy all the right people. I’m Piers Morgan, uncensored."
