Piers Morgan called for Boris Johnson to be sacked after the Prime Minister was fined by police over rule-breaking.
Johnson, along with his wife Carrie Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak, will all be given fixed penalty notices after attending parties during lockdown at Downing Street, police confirmed on Tuesday.
He has become the first ever serving Prime Minister of the UK to be sanctioned for breaking the law, after attending a party for his birthday on 19 June 2020, when the country was in lockdown due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Piers took to Twitter shortly after the news was announced, and vented his fury at the Prime Minister as he told his followers it was a “very serious moment” for the controversial political leader following the ‘Partygate’ scandal.
“How does a serving Prime Minister survive being fined by police for breaking laws that he enforced on the rest of the country?” he began.
“He clearly misled Parliament at best, deliberately lied to Parliament at worst. Very serious moment for Boris Johnson,” Piers added.
He then asked fellow Conservative Party members if they were “comfortable” with “having law-breaking Prime Minister & Chancellor.”
“Bottom line: why should the British public follow any laws if those in charge of setting them so brazenly break them & keep their jobs?” the former Britain's Got Talent judge fumed.
He then turned his attention to Johnson's future in Downing Street, and suggested it won’t be long before he’s booted out of his role as leader.
“I’m struggling to see how Boris Johnson can survive becoming the first serving British Prime Minister to be found guilty of breaking the law. Especially when it was a law HE created to stop the rest of us doing what he then did,” Piers wrote.
A Number 10 spokesperson said in a statement that the Metropolitan Police explained what the fixed penalty notice was in regard to, and confirmed it was relating to the gathering held at Downing Street for Johnson's birthday.
“On 19 June 2020 at the Cabinet Room 10 Downing Street between 14:00 and 15:00 you participated in a gathering of two or more people indoors in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street,” they added.
A spokesperson for Johnson's wife Carrie said she “apologised unreservedly” for her part in the scandal, but said she “believed that she was acting in accordance with the rules at the time”.
