Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Chelsea shirt number revealed with controversial decision made

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken a risk with his shirt number choice at Chelsea.

The forward was announced as a Blues player after the transfer window closed after a deal with Barcelona was agreed earlier in the day with Marcos Alonso understood to be going the other way in the move.

The Gabonese striker signed a two-year deal, football.london understands, and will join his former manager Thomas Tuchel once more after the pair enjoyed a fruitful relationship together at Borussia Dortmund.

Aubameyang's choice of shirt number is a controversial one though, taking over a number that has a plagued past at Stamford Bridge. The 33-year-old will be the club's newest No.9, taking over from Romelu Lukaku after he left he club on a season-long loan deal earlier this summer.

Before Lukaku, Tammy Abraham was the next most successful player to wear the shirt in recent memory with a history of failure with those that have donned the iconic top. Also on the list include Steve Sidwell, Franco Di Santo, Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao, Alvaro Morata and Khalid Boulahrouz in wearing the shirt.

Aubameyang has previously worn the No.9 shirt for Saint-Etienne - during the 2010/11 season - and for Dijon in 2008 before that. During his brief spell at Barcelona he was No.17 - currently occupied by Raheem Sterling - whilst he was No.14 at Arsenal, No.17 at Dortmund and No.7 for most of his time at St Etienne.

Chelsea fans and Tuchel will now be hoping he can overcome the so-called curse that comes with the top.
