Preda Eugene, 39, was pronounced dead after he was found with the critical injury in the deserted area near to Walthamstow Avenue, Chingford at 9.10pm on Wednesday.
Police said Eugene was living in a hut in the woodland. They are still working to find his family.

Two people – a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman – have been charged with murder after handing themselves in to a south London police station.
Detective Inspector Frank Copley, said: “Although we’ve now charged two people in connection with Preda’s murder, I am still keen to hear from anyone who has information about what led up to his death.
“We know that he was living in a hut in the woodland but what happened to cause his death? Did you see him, or anyone else in the area between Saturday, 11th February and the day he was found?
“Any piece of information could be vital in establishing exactly what happened.”
