The water between the roots
The water at Pichavaram doesn't move the way water usually moves. It sits between the roots of the mangrove trees like something that has decided to stay, dark, still, cut into channels so narrow your wooden boat barely fits through. You can reach out and touch both banks at once. Above you, the canopy closes. Light comes through in pieces, not as warmth but as geometry, thin lines falling across the water at angles that shift as the boatman poles you deeper in.
