Photos show aftermath of major car fire in Sneinton street

A community were left in shock after a car burst into flames on a busy residential street.

Neighbours on Trent Road in Sneinton described the dramatic moment when the vehicle was engulfed in 'black, thick smoke' with the blaze ripping through the car roof.

Firefighters frrom London Road arrived at the scene just after midday on Friday (January 21) using hose reels to extinguish the blaze.

The road was cordoned off while officers carried out inquiries into the incident. No one was injured and the incident is not being treated as suspicious, the force has confirmed.

The car involved has been taken off the road and normal traffic resumed around 1pm.

Ali Mansor, who lives near to where the car had caught fire, said: "I was a bit scared - I was upstairs and the smoke was everywhere.

"You could see that it was steering wheel that was on fire - and then it spread out.

"Thank goodness it didn't reach the petrol tank - I was scared of an explosion."

The 24-year-old, who is also a postgraduate student at Nottingham Trent University, added: "Police and firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes - they were very quick.

"It was all covered in black thick smoke - it was everywhere - it was all very scary.

"I remember I jumped next to the window and watched everything - it was shocking."

Tahir Javid, who runs the only post office in Sneinton, 51, said: "Nothing really shocks me in Sneinton - I have been living here for 22 years now.

"It is important that no one got hurt.

"The scene was shocking when police and the fire brigade arrived.

"But they handled very quickly.

"Now we are just praying that the people involved are okay.

"This community are like my family so I care when incidents like this happen around here."

One resident, who lives across the road where the vehicle reportedly caught fire, said he witnessed the whole incident.

He added: "It was a young couple - and the driver broke down in the middle of the road.

"I offered to help them move the car - so they pushed the car to the side while I was inside.

"I noticed smoke coming from the glove box and I could see the plastic starting to melt - it looked like an electric fire.

"I got out of the vehicle and called the fire - they arrived within minutes."

He said that the blaze expanded rapidly - and in a few minutes the vehicle was covered in smoke.

"It ripped through the roof - the driver seemed quite agitated, and understandably concerned.

"It was very shocking to see how quickly the whole thing was covered in smoke."
