Phillip Schofield’s absence as host of This Morning has turned into something of a TV drama in its own right.
His management wanted him back on screen as soon as possible after his brother’s sex case trial. But ITV chiefs had used Schofield’s time off to test out other hosts.
The Mirror reports that the UK broadcaster felt a longer break would allow the dust to settle – while giving them time to continue screen-testing presenters.

TV favourite Phillip, 61, has not been on air for a fortnight but is tipped for a return on April 17.
His initial absence came ahead of his brother Timothy’s trial for sexually assaulting a young boy.
Timothy, 54, was found guilty last Monday and will be sentenced next month.
Phillip said after the case: "If any crime had ever been confessed to me, I would have acted immediately. As far as I am concerned, I no longer have a brother."
Sources said that while Phil’s team at talent agency YMU were keen to get him back quickly, ITV bosses suggested more time off.
One source said: "YMU’s view was the sooner Phillip was back the better.
"But ITV offered him the chance to have more time off. They felt a longer break would benefit him as he has been in bits at points over the past few weeks.
"They were also keen to see how audiences responded to other presenters.
"ITV have a lot of talent and this was a good opportunity to test people out.
"It is possible in future there may be a presenting shakeup, and experiments like this are really helpful."
ITV have denied the conversations, and added: "Phil is due to return after the Easter holidays.
"We don’t comment on speculation around artists’ contracts."
Phillip and co-host Holly Willoughby are famed for their giggles.
Viewers have seen a variety of stand-ins, including Joel Dommett and extra appearances by Friday hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.
Craig Doyle and Josie Gibson will be on Monday.
Phil’s contract is up for renewal this year and a source close to him confirmed he is "looking forward" to his return.
