Phillip Schofield made a subtle dig at Victoria Beckham on Tuesday’s This Morning, after the former Spice Girl described the desire to be very thin as an “old fashioned attitude”.
The 48-year-old speculated that women nowadays want to be curvy amid the launch of her new VB Body shapewear collection.
The fashion designer told Grazia magazine : “It's an old-fashioned attitude, wanting to be really thin. I think women today want to look healthy, and curvy. They want to have some boobs - and a bum.”
This Morning presenters Phillip and Holly Willoughby sat down to discuss the new magazine profile, in which Victoria posed in pieces from her shapewear range for the cover of the magazine - including channelling a Playboy bunny.
Holly told ITV viewers: “She’s described the desire to be very thin as an old fashioned attitude, saying women now want to be curvy. Is there a shift now?”
But co-host Phil then quipped: “Says the incredibly thin Victoria Beckham.”
Journalist Camilla Tominey agreed, saying that was “the problem”, before adding that she didn’t want to be “thin-shaming”.
She said: “This is somebody that eats grilled fish and steamed vegetables for every meal, so I get what she’s trying to say but I think it’s a bit rich for Victoria Beckham to be thinking about body image when she hasn’t always projected this idea of a woman that loves her food.”
But Holly and Phil then jumped in, both saying: “She’s allowed to be whatever she wants to be.”
Camilla then replied: “As a mother of daughters, I find some of this celebrity imagery of perfection is unattainable for a lot of young women.
“It’s not an unfiltered version of who we are. A few women will have had a sharp intake of breath here to hear Victoria Beckham, of all people, talking about curviness.”
In the Grazia interview, the mother-of-four said there are "a lot of really curvy women" in Miami - where her and David Beckham, 47, spend time due to his co-ownership of Inter Miami CF.
She has revealed that the inspiration behind the new line - which is priced between £90 and £650 per piece - is the desire among women to have a "round, curvy bottom."
She said such individuals "really own" their physiques and "show their bodies off with such confidence," with their attitude and style described as "liberating" by Victoria.
She added that as a mother, she loves that her youngest child Harper Beckham, 10, has been around women who "really celebrate their curves and enjoy how they look."
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
