Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has endured a rough start to his first season in Philadelphia, to say the least.
Turner was honest with himself regarding his slump just this week, admitting that he’s “sucked” so far this season. Through 48 games, the shortstop has a .687 OPS, which is his lowest since his MLB debut in 2015.
Phillies fans began booing the two-time All-Star during his plate appearances, and that apparently includes one of the people closest to Turner: his mom.
“My mom prepared me for anything in this game and in this world,” Turner said Wednesday after the Phillies’ 6–5 win over the Diamondbacks, via Phillies Nation’s Tim Kelly. “She was tough on me from an early age and not much fazes me. She told me today that she was booing me. She actually texted me and said, ‘Good game, except for your fourth at-bat.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, not a good one.’ And she said ‘I was booing you.’”

The fourth at-bat Turner referred to resulted in a seventh-inning strikeout that led the crowd at Citizens Bank Park to boo Turner off the field.
Turner ended up being somewhat of a hero for the Phillies fans on Wednesday, though, as he tied the game in the ninth inning with a two-run home run. The Phillies ended up winning in the 10th inning.
Turner signed an 11-year, $300 million contract with Philadelphia in December.
