Phil Thompson believes Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott could be a shrewd pick for England’s World Cup squad this winter.
The Three Lions have qualified for the major tournament, which will take place in Qatar starting in November, and the likes of Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez will all hope to be selected by Gareth Southgate.
Elliott is relatively inexperienced at international level, having yet to earn his first senior cap. He has eight appearances to his name for England’s under-17s and just one for Lee Carsley’s under-21s.

Despite this, Liverpool legend Thompson thinks England boss Southgate would be wise to name the 19-year-old attacking midfielder in his squad.
“I think Southgate will look to bring through some younger players,” Thompson told Paddy Power .
“I know we all scoffed at it when they called up Theo Walcott in Eriksen’s 2006 World Cup squad, but I think there’s a place for these young players.
“Someone at my club he might look at is Harvey Elliott, he’s creative and has the ability to open up defences.
“And I think players like that - that have a great assist ratio, with that knack for creating goal – can take that forward onto the big stage.”
