Pharmacist issues urgent warning for people going on foreign holidays

Well Pharmacy is urging holidaymakers to make sure they get the travel vaccinations they need for their destinations done in plenty of time before their summer break. The plea comes in the wake of a new poll which has found that just under one in five people (19%) were not clear what vaccinations they needed for their holiday destinations, and another third (33%) were only sure sometimes.

Well Pharmacy offers a specialist travel vaccination service at selected pharmacies across the UK.

George Sandhu, Deputy Superintendent Pharmacist at Well Pharmacy, said: “Staying healthy on holiday could be the difference between making wonderful memories and a trip you would rather forget.

“Our travel vaccination service helps people check which jabs they are likely to need and lets them book them in online – saving time and stress.

“It’s important to check in with your local community pharmacist before you travel, as they can also provide advice on which over-the-counter products – such as a first aid kit – are a must for your destination, alongside how to travel with prescription medication and to take care of your skin in a different climate.

“And it goes without saying that nobody should travel abroad without an appropriate level of travel insurance that covers any pre-existing illnesses as well as anything new that happens. Even a relatively minor incident could be expensive, so it’s an important part of having a safe trip.”

Well Pharmacy top tips for overseas travel:

•Plan ahead! Check well in advance what vaccines or medication you and your family may need and ensure you book and order them in good time

•Take a first aid kit in case of minor injuries

•Ensure you have adequate and appropriate travel insurance in place

•If you are on repeat medication, ensure you have sufficient supplies and that you have them well in advance of travelling

•Don’t forget to download your coronavirus >covid vaccination status evidence if you still need it

•Protect yourself from the sun. If you are unsure what protection you should use, speak to your pharmacy team in advance

•Stay hydrated, ensuring you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day

•To protect any exposed skin from insect bites, try to wear light clothing with a high neckline, long sleeves, long trousers/dress/skirt and socks.
