PGMOL respond to Jurgen Klopp's Paul Tierney accusation after Liverpool victory over Tottenham

PGMOL have released a statement supporting referee Paul Tierney after he was accused of speaking out of tone by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in his side's 4-3 win against Tottenham. The seven-goal thriller was settled in the final minutes after Diogo Jota scored just moments after Richarlison thought he'd snatched a point with his first Premier League strike for Spurs.

The fierce clash included a number of talking points both on and off the pitch, with Oliver Skipp heavily involved. In the second half, the Tottenham midfielder went unpunished for a late challenge on Luis Diaz before he was struck by a flailing Jota boot which only saw the Reds forward booked.

On the touchline, Klopp was booked by Tierney before going up to fourth official John Brooks and celebrating in his face after Jota's winner. At full time Klopp also marched onto the pitch to speak again with Tierney before clapping the Liverpool fans.

After the game, Klopp pulled no punches in his criticism of officials, with particular jibes aimed at Tierney. "We have our history with Tierney," Klopp said to Sky Sports. "I really don't know what he has against us. He has said there [are] no problems but that cannot be true.

"How he looks at me, I don't understand it. In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it's really tricky and hard to understand. What he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK."

PGMOL, the body responsible for Premier League referees, then released a statement in response to the accusation made by Klopp.

That statement read: "PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his side's fixture with Tottenham Hotspur. Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system.

"Having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today's fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout, including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager. So, therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney's actions were improper."
