The PGMOL have admitted that the decision to not award Brighton a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday was a mistake.
Spurs secured all three points, winning 2-1 in north London but not without some controversy along the way. Roberto De Zerbi's side had two goals chalked off by VAR and were denied what looked to be a clear penalty at 1-1 when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg appeared to foul Kaoru Mitoma in the box.
PGMOL's chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has now apologised to the Seagulls, admitting that the onfield officials and VAR got it wrong. After the match, Brighton defender Lewis Dunk gave a scathing verdict of the officiating, questioning the use of VAR.

"There's no point having VAR in the game if you're not going to make big decisions like that," Dunk said after the full-time whistle. "That changes everything, I just don't understand it."
When discussing the decision to disallow Mitoma's goal for a handball, the English centre-back added: "They can make the decision for the handball but can't make the other ones. I think they made one tight decision for a handball but they don't make a clear decision on the penalty."
The result means Tottenham are still fifth in the Premier League table, although they are now seven points above Brighton, albeit having played two extra games. The Lilywhites are just three points behind Newcastle and Manchester United, who sit third and fourth respectively but they also both have a game in hand on the north Londoners.
