Peter Wright has opened up on the terrifying moments his wife Joanne feared she was dying after being rushed to hospital during the Grand Slam of Darts.
PDC world champion Wright competed at the Wolverhampton event after beloved wife Joanne told him to carry on despite her worrying health turn. A concerned and distracted Wright was knocked out during the group stages and was then at his wife's side as she required urgent medical attention after a complication from a gallbladder removal operation.
And Snakebite has now revealed the full details of an awful period for his family. The 52-year-old explained how his wife was left in severe pain and suffered from a collapsed lung as her health deteriorated after the complication.
“It has been a dreadful couple of weeks," Wright told The Sun. "Jo was taken to hospital on the first weekend of the Grand Slam. Jo was in absolute agony and told me she feared she was dying because the pain was that bad. Firstly docs thought she was just rundown after the gallbladder and hysterectomy removal.
“Apparently the pain was caused by a slit in the bile duct which meant bile was leaking inside her. Since then she has deteriorated with other issues including dehydration and even a collapsed lung."
Worried Wright confirmed that Joanne remains in hospital undergoing tests, with her recovery still being monitored. “On top of it all, I wasn't allowed into the hospital to see her for six days," he added.
"It’s just been ridiculously worrying for us all. Obviously I couldn’t concentrate on darts at all. My mind was completely on Jo and not the Grand Slam, I was not at the races at all. The worry still isn’t over at all. Jo is still in hospital and is undergoing tests and trying to recover.”
Wright has three kids with wife Joanne and the couple have been married for 14 years. She is a hairdresser by trade and designs Snakebite's trademark whacky hairstyles that darts fans have grown to love.
Joanne also explained how more fears for her life came with the hallucinating effects of powerful painkillers. “I was hallucinating and seeing monsters, it was very scary," she said. "If a window had been high enough to jump out of to die, I would have jumped. I’m not allowed home yet because of the collapsed lung."
