Peter Schmeichel voices Manchester United dilemma after Erik ten Hag appointment

Peter Schmeichel is feeling 'positive' after Manchester United appointed Erik ten Hag — but that verdict also comes with a warning for his old employers. Schmeichel made 384 appearances for United during a memorable eight-year spell that saw him win five Premier League medals and the 1999 Champions League.

Fast forward to the present day and Ten Hag is set to step into the line of duty at United at the end of this season after chasing a third Eredivisie title in four years. His appointment has been confirmed with Ajax picking up a £1.7million compensation fee to release him from his contract.

United have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and the last silverware of any kind came when Jose Mourinho led them to a League Cup and Europa League double five years ago. So what is needed to change for Ten Hag to restore past glories when he steps into the Old Trafford hot-seat?

Schmeichel told CBS: "It's a decision that's been made and I think that's very, very positive. There are, and I think it's obvious to everyone, so many things that need to be done at Manchester United.

"The whole football department needs to be restructured. The way we are thinking about how things are supposed to be done, everything needs a bit of a rethink. Announcing the manager is a decision that needed to be made.

"It's a step in the right direction but, If I'm honest, it could be him or it could be literally anyone. It's such a big job so everything would be a bit of a gamble.

"I wish him all the best and hope he can help in the process of rebuilding Manchester United."
