Peter Crouch admits he was 'close' to Newcastle transfer and dreamt of wearing the number nine

Peter Crouch admits he once came 'close' to signing for Newcastle United at a time when there were a 'couple of rumours' surrounding a prospective deal. The former England international enjoyed a nomadic career in the Premier League, most notably playing for Liverpool and Tottenham before finishing his career at Burnley in 2019.

Crouch also enjoyed a spell as an England regular, netting 22 times in 42 appearances for the Three Lions. Despite this admission over Newcastle's interest in a deal, the ex-striker never turned out in black-and-white although he did score an injury-time equaliser for Stoke City at St James' Park in February 2015.

The 42-year-old was full of praise for the Magpies' home ground and even hummed the tune of Blaydon Races in a review of stadiums on his self-named podcast. The infamous slant on the pitch itself, which often favours the hosts attacking the Gallowgate End in the second-half, also came under discussion.

However, perhaps the most intriguing point to emerge was Crouch confirming rumours around a prospective move were not entirely unfounded. While the pundit did not give any dates or reasons as to why the transfer did not happen, he did reveal he was excited about the prospect of potentially donning the famous number nine shirt.

He told That Peter Crouch Podcast: "I think there was a couple of rumours that I would go there at one stage. You think of all the iconic number nines that Newcastle have had, and they didn't have one at the time when I was close to going. I thought what a place to go and play football."
