It was the sound of dogs barking at rescuers that led them to find an elderly man who had been missing in bushland for two nights in Queensland's North Burnett region.
David Grimes, 84, was treated for hypothermia and flown to the Bundaberg hospital, where he died on Thursday evening.
Mr Grimes had left his home at Penwhaupell, near Gayndah, to take his Jack Russell terriers Peter and Chloe for a walk on Monday afternoon.
His family alerted police when he didn't return, which sparked a large multi-agency search on the ground and from the air.
"We had up to 15 local people on foot and horseback at any given time over the past two-and-a-half days searching what was very rugged country," Queensland Police Inspector Paul Algie said.
Rescuers told the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue chopper crew the man had been extremely difficult to spot.
Over the two nights Mr Grimes was missing, temperatures dropped to single digits, which led authorities to hold serious concerns his welfare.
It was on Wednesday afternoon, when a local man searching on horseback was alerted by dogs barking that they found Mr Grimes lying among rocks where he was partly submerged in water.
"It was an excellent effort from local people, but also emergency service volunteers as well as Queensland Police Service staff," Inspector Algie said.
