Hikers counting on reaching Machu Picchu on foot are out of luck for now. Since Wednesday, August 19, Peruvian authorities have blocked all entry to the Inca Trail network, the multi-day trekking route into the Inca citadel, after a run of heavy rain set off mudslides, overflowing streams and damage at no fewer than eleven points along the path. Cusco's regional culture authority, the Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura (DDC), says the suspension holds "until further notice." The closure doesn't touch arrivals by train or bus, which continue on their normal schedule — only travelers booked for the classic overland trek are being turned back.
