A woman dubbed “Australia’s Baby Reindeer” has been sentenced to five years behind bars after continuing to taunt her victims after she was convicted of stalking.
Kobi Langshaw is a 38-year-old mum of three and a law clerk from Perth whose serial stalking antics drew similarities to the character of Martha (played by Jessica Gunning) on Netflix’s IRL-inspired drama Baby Reindeer.
On October 10, Langshaw was jailed after being found guilty of 22 counts of breaching a restraining order, two counts of pursuing another with intent to intimidate under circumstances of aggravation and one count of stalking with intent to intimidate for events which took place in 2020.
Magistrate Belinda Coleman described Langshow’s stalking efforts as a “deliberate, unrelenting and carefully calculated” campaign against two men whom she’d developed an obsession with.
During the sentencing, Magistrate Coleman stated that Langshaw met the diagnostic criteria for anti-social personality disorder or sociopathy, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder and narcissism. She also stated that she believed that Langshaw was “very dangerous”.
“You remain at high risk of reoffending. Not just against Mr Herbert and Mr Gardner, but others in the community,” she said.
“My review of the cases has confirmed to me that your behaviour was extremely serious and falls at the highest end of the scale for offences of this type.”
For eight years, Langshaw stalked lawyer Patrick Gardner after he represented her in Family Court in 2015, and his best friend Aaron Herbert.
In 2016, Gardner took out a restraining order against Langshaw.
Despite this, Langshaw persisted, moving to the suburb where both men lived and popping up at their local cafes and workplaces. In a previous court appearance in May, Magistrate Coleman ordered that Langshaw be barred for life from going within two kilometres of the Perth CBD where both men work and the suburb where they live. She was also ordered not to contact her victims again.
“I take everything you say to me, Ms Langshaw, with a grain of salt, unless there is independent evidence. You have continuously committed offences against these men. I am not adjusting the boundaries,” Magistrate Coleman said at the time, per The Australian.
Although she faced a lifetime ban, Langshaw breached the ban and the violence restraining order by loitering near her victim’s offices and local cafes.
Langshaw also ran a TikTok account in which she used filters to make her appear younger and posed as a university student. She posted videos which contained cryptic messages and her bio on the social media app openly mocked her victims.
“Be like a butterfly — always beautiful but hard to catch,” it read.
The Daily Mail reported that Langshaw posted multiple times a day, posing trending sounds as “a lovesick student” from a room decorated in a childlike manner.
Langshaw’s case quickly drew comparisons with Netflix’s hit series Baby Reindeer, which follows the experiences of comedian Richard Gadd who was allegedly stalked by a woman with law experience whom he met whilst working in a pub.
