Perth and Kinross secondary schools to partially close due to teacher strike

All secondary schools in Perth and Kinross except Pitlochry High School will be closed to pupils in S1-S4 next Thursday because of teacher strikes.

Pitlochry High School, which provides education for children from S1 to S4, all ELC settings and primary schools will stay open as normal on December 8.

Members of the SSTA and NASUWT unions are taking industrial action because of a national dispute over pay.

The decision has been taken to close other secondary schools to S1-S4 pupils where staffing numbers will be too low to guarantee pupils’ safety.

Kids Clubs, wraparound care and School Lets will be open on December 8 with all settings to open as normal on Friday, December 9.

Free School Meal payments will still be made directly to those who receive them and who are in receipt of qualifying payments.

Sharon Johnston, head of education and learning with the council said: “There will be no blanket closure of our schools. However, pupil safety is always our overriding priority and we have decided not to fully open schools where there will not be enough staff to do so safely.

“This means our secondary schools, with the exception of Pitlochry High School, will only be open to senior pupils in S5 and S6.

“These pupils will attend classes as normal unless a teacher is taking part in the industrial action, in which case pupils will be asked to study during those classes instead. Negotiations are continuing at a national level.

"We will continue to update parents and carers.”
