A brand new remake has been announced for Persona 3 at E3 2023. Entitled Persona 3 Reload, the upcoming title looks to be a complete overhaul of the original cult classic. According to the gorgeous new trailer, the game will be available "early 2024", including satisfying turn-based combat and RPG elements updated for a modern audience.
Persona 3 is among the best RPGs ever made. Though Persona 5 catapulted the series to new heights of notoriety, it was with Persona 3 that a wide range of the beloved mechanics found in Persona 5 got their start.
Persona 3 follows a group of high-school students doing their best to cope with death and emotional trauma. They form a special group to investigate a mysterious supernatural phenomenon called The Dark Hour. During The Dark Hour, you will journey to the eerie tower of Tartarus and battle sinister Shadows in order to get to the bottom of the occult mysteries at the heart of the story.
Though it's early days, it looks like Persona 3 Reload is likely to be a faithful recreation of the original, rather than a market departure like Final Fantasy 7 Remake. However, this isn't to say that there won't be more content on offer in the final version. We may well see additional voiced dialogue as well as new music tracks and enemies. Though we don't know exactly what changes to expect, yet, it seems likely that ATLUS will introduce at least one or two goodies to keep series veterans happy.
Persona 3 Reload is also likely to include the option to play as a female protagonist, as introduced in Persona 3 Portable, which was released for PlayStation Portable in 2009. For those wanting to give Portable a go, a remaster is available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Persona 3 Reload will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on release day.
