It is thought the incident occurred this afternoon (Sunday, March 20) at around 3.30pm, with TransPennine Express tweeting that there would be cancellations and delays expected until at least 5pm, as the train was unable to move from its position on the tracks.

Various services, including the 4.32pm from Sheffield to Piccadilly, 4.43pm from Piccadilly to Sheffield and the 5.32pm from Sheffield to Piccadilly have all been cancelled as a result, with live updates available online. These are all Northern services.

In a response to a passenger on the train, who tweeted about the incident, TransPennine said: "I'm sorry for the delay to your journey, this train has struck a person sadly at Hathersage. Emergency services are on site at this station and the train is currently unable to move."

It comes as services across the network were already disrupted throughout the day due to strike action. See a full breakdown of journeys affected here.

Northern tweeted: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between New Mills Central and Sheffield the line is blocked in both directions."
