Person found dead on railway line

A person has been died after reportedly being hit by a train between Liverpool and Warrington.

British Transport Police were called to the line, between Liverpool South Parkway and Warrington Central, at Widnes, at 6.26pm on Tuesday, November 22. They found a person on the tracks.

Other emergency services also arrived, including North West Ambulance Service, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have confirmed they have launched an investigation into the incident and that a file is now being prepared for the coroner.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line in Widnes at 6.26pm last night, 22 November, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are working to establish the full circumstances behind their death and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

After the incident, a spokesperson from East Midland Railway said: "Sadly, as person has been hit by a train between Warrington Central and Liverpool South Parkway. The emergency service and Network Rail are now in attendance at the incident.

"Trains running through the area in both direction cannot run between Warrington Central and Liverpool South Parkway. Were possible, trains will take a diversionary route to and from Liverpool Lime Street. This may add up to 20 minutes onto your journey time.

"At present, we do not know when the line will reopen. Once the emergency service have arrived at the incident we will be provided with an update."
