Person dies after being struck by train on Scots railway line

A person has died after being struck by a train on a Highlands rail line.

Emergency services rushed to Alness railway station shortly before 8pm last night, following reports that a casualty had sustained serious injuries following the collision.

Paramedics attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

British Transport Police have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Alness sits in between Invergordon and Dingwall and is part of the Far North Line which connects Inverness to Thurso and Wick.

ScotRail confirmed the line was shut last night to allow emergency services to work but has since been re-opened this morning.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Alness railway station at 7.43pm on March 29, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not being treated as suspicious and file will be prepared for the procurator fiscal.”
