PepsiCo is recalling 122,021 cases of 28-ounce Gatorade bottles sold in 37 states because the labels did not list the yellow food dyes inside. The affected drinks are Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange, and Orange Zero. Their labels did not declare FD&C Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine) or FD&C Yellow No. 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF), according to FDA enforcement data first reported by Newsweek.
For most households, this is a labeling problem, not a contamination problem. Both dyes are approved food colors, and most people consume them without trouble. The risk falls on a smaller group: people who know they react to tartrazine, including some people with asthma or aspirin sensitivity who rely on ingredient labels to avoid it.
