Pepsi has launched a warming new flavour in a nod to both Christmas and football as the World Cup continues. The soft drink giant has unveiled its limited edition flavour Pepsi Nutmeg - describing it as having a "warm, nutty twist".
As well as giving the fizzy favourite a fiery makeover with a spice that's usually associated with the festive season, the drink also pays homage to Pepsi's latest football campaign, Nutmeg Royale - an epic film featuring football icons like Lionel Messi and celebrating the game’s craftiest move.
In the spice world, nutmeg, which is made from the seed of the nutmeg tree, is often used in drinks like mulled wine or tea, or in desserts and curries. In the footballing world, a nutmeg is when a player kicks the ball through an opponent's legs.
Pepsi has managed to combine the two to make an interesting new flavour. It's also likely to stand out on the shelves, as the company has replaced its iconic dark blue or black packaging for a light sandy-coloured can instead.
Speaking about the new flavour, Pepsi’s Senior Director, Global Marketing, Gustavo Reyna said: “We had so much fun bringing our latest football campaign ‘Nutmeg Royale’ to life. After centring a project around one of football’s craftiest moves, it made perfect sense for us to explore the option of creating a limited-edition flavour that complimented the cunning skill.
"Pepsi has always been known for fun and daring takes on our classic cola through the exploration of exciting flavour innovations. From Cherry, to Lime, to Nitro and now Nutmeg, we love pushing flavour boundaries! Pepsi Nutmeg is no different - innovation, fun and flavour at its finest and we are so excited to share with the world."
Pepsi Nutmeg is being released on an "extremely limited product run" so fans will have to be quick to get their hands on the warming new flavour. It's not yet available to buy in stores, but Pepsi said those hoping to buy one should keep an eye on their social media pages to see when they are released.
