Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has sent a message to Southampton ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Liverpool and said that the Reds’ remaining results in the Premier League don’t matter anymore.
Guardiola’s side lead Liverpool by four points after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham but Jurgen Klopp’s side have a game in hand when they face Southampton on Tuesday night. It could have been worse for City as they trailed 2-0 at half time before Jack Grealish and a Vladimir Coufal own goal levelled the tie. Riyad Mahrez missed a late penalty but the draw means that if City win against Aston Villa next week, they will be champions.
After the game, Guardiola urged Southampton to help City out and admitted his side need to just focus on winning next weekend. He said: “Well I would say [to Southampton] beat Liverpool 4-0. But it’s not about that. It doesn’t matter what happens in both [Liverpool] games and I’m pretty sure mentally I’m thinking they’re going to make six points so it’s in our hands. The debate is over on if they lose or win and it depends on us.
