Arsenal's hopes of landing Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan this summer have been given a huge boost by manager Pep Guardiola. It comes as the Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the German midfielder heading into the upcoming transfer window.
The 32-year-old has impressed in his time with the Cityzens, becoming a crucial part of the team both on and off the pitch. Gundogan played had his say in the Premier League title race against Arsenal this season too, chipping in with some crucial goals late in the campaign.
The serial winner is now facing a crossroads in his career, with his contract expiring in the coming weeks, despite Guardiola's calls for him to stay. It leaves plenty of uncertainty surrounding the future of Gundogan, something that may have become even less clearer. That's because, according to Fabrizio Romano, City have made an approach to Chelsea in hopes of signing midfielder Mateo Kovacic, with talks ongoing.
The Croatian international is approaching the final 12-months of his own contract at Stamford Bridge and football.london understands that Chelsea are preparing to move him on. While there is no agreement in place yet, the move could open up the future of Gundogan.
Arsenal are hoping to add to their own midfield this summer too as football.london understands that Declan Rice is a top priority for the Gunners. Kovacic's arrival in Manchester may mean that the Gundogan is free to leave City, green lighting a possible switch to Arsenal this summer on a free transfer to partner Rice.
