People told to close windows as blaze rips through scrapyard

People are being told to close their windows as a blaze rips through a scrapyard.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call at 7.13pm on Friday, October 7, following reports of a blaze on Crowland Close, Southport. Four fire engines arrived at the scene six minutes later and found a 20x30 square metre section of the yard alight.

Firefighters are using two hose reel jets and two main branch hoses as they attempt to fight the flames. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service have said the incident is ongoing.

A spokesperson said: "Crews were alerted at 7.13pm and on scene at 7.19pm. The incident is ongoing, please avoid the area. Residents and businesses nearby should keep doors and windows closed.

"If you have an existing medical condition, keep medicines nearby and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice."

A spokesperson from Sefton Council said: "Emergency services are dealing with a fire at Crowland Street in Southport. People are being asked to stay away from the area and homes nearby are being advised to close all windows and doors."
