People say what they'd like to see replace bank in Nottingham city centre that's closing

People in Nottingham city centre have been speaking about what they'd like to see replace a city centre bank that's set to close.

The branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in South Parade, off Old Market Square, is one of a number of branches being closed across the country.

Planning documents have been filed to remove the ATM as the operations from the building are wound down.

The closure is part of a larger move, coming after it was announced on February 14 that 32 branches of NatWest and RBS would close, including branches in Nottingham city centre, Bulwell and Hucknall.

The NatWest Group, which runs both NatWest and RBS, said the move was a result in a drop in the use of branches since the pandemic began.

With the city centre branch closing, people in Nottingham have shared what they would like to see in its place.

One man said he was keen for the building to remain in use as a bank.

Gary Hall, 60, who's retired and lives in Hucknall, said: "We do need more banks around here, there are one or two dotted in the city centre but there aren't that many outside of that.

"It's harder to find a bank to go into now.

"There are already a lot of coffee shops and you don't see department stores or anything like that now; a bank would be fine."

A clothes shop or fashion shop were also mentioned to replace the RBS branch.

Rebecca McNaboe, 23, a full-time mum from Bulwell, said: "There are no places to get good baby clothes, especially ones for my little boy.

"It seems every single shop has baby girls' clothes available but I really struggle to get them for my boy.

"Something like that would be good."

Maureen King, 79, who's retired and lives in Mapperley, said: "Fashion shops have disappeared, and it would be great to see one there - not an expensive one, though.

"I think it would be a really nice place for one there.

"It's a shame to see the bank there close, though."

And another man said he wanted the site to remain in use in some capacity.

Tony Allen, 71, who's retired and lives in Aspley, said: "Anything there would be better than it standing derelict.

"It needs a use and banks are closing a lot because it's all going online, it's hard for physical shops and stores to compete.

"I don't mind what it becomes as you've already got everything you need in the city centre."

People in Bulwell, meanwhile, recently explained how they're "scared the area will turn into nothing" ahead of the closure of a NatWest branch in the town centre.
