People on State Pension or benefits set to receive payments early next month due to bank holidays

Two bank holidays take place next month that will see some people receive scheduled payments earlier than planned. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has already published updated payment date details for Tax Credits and Child Benefit due over the affected days in May, while the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is expected to announce similar changes soon.

The May Day bank holiday is on Monday, May 1 and payments delivered by HMRC, including Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Child Benefit and Guardian’s Allowance, due on that date will be made on Friday, April 28. DWP is also expected to announce similar changes to payments due for State Pension and benefits including Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) - we will update this article with confirmation.

The Coronation of King Charles III takes place on Saturday, May 6 which will see Monday, May 8 classed as a bank holiday. HMRC has confirmed payments due on that date will be made on Friday, May 5.

DWP has not confirmed any changes yet, but is expected to do so shortly. Typically, DWP payments are made when offices and lines are open and on nationally recognised bank holidays when offices are closed, payments are made on the first working day prior to the affected date.

This would see payments due on Monday, May 8 paid on Friday, May 5.

The bank holiday immediately after the Coronation of King Charles on May 6 has been set aside for volunteering and is being billed as ‘the big help out’. Organised by The Together Coalition and a wide range of partners such as The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and faith groups from across the UK, the big help out aims to highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities.

Buckingham Palace said in tribute to the King's public service, the big help out ‘will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas’. The aim of the day is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation weekend.
