People mortified to discover why you should never wear red to a wedding

Most people in the UK will be aware that wearing a gleaming white dress is widely regarded as a wedding guest faux pas, perhaps only surpassed by cutting into the cake yourself and handing it out.

Few realise however that there's another colour you should be avoiding at all costs on someone else's special day - unless you're there to deliberately start trouble of course.

Many of us would think nothing of wearing red to a wedding - a striking colour that's glamorous and as different from bridal white as it's possible to imagine.

Unfortunately, if you've currently got a red dress hung up in your wardrobe ready for a pal's big day then you might want to reconsider as it has a hidden meaning that may turn your face bright scarlet too.

In a recent episode of The Unfiltered Bride podcast, co-hosts, and wedding planners Georgie Mitchell and Bethany Smith revealed why a red frock should be nowhere near the wedding reception, leaving many listeners shocked.

To the amazement of Bethany, Georgie revealed that according to "an old wives' tale", wearing this particular colour "means you've slept with the groom".

Although she hadn't heard of this before, Bethany agreed that she associated red with being "quite sexy", and a bit "naughty". Both podcast hosts agreed the colour has a certain "look at me" quality to it.

Georgie added: "I don't think I would rule out wearing red to a wedding, it would depend on the dress."

A number of listeners confessed they'd already committed the faux pas (Stock Photo) (Getty Images/iStockphoto)

A number of listeners were left positively flabbergasted by this revelation, with many admitting they'd committed this wedding no-no without even realising.

One person commented: "I had no idea about red! My best friend's wife is super threatened by me and when we went to her wedding I wore red... oops!"

Another chuckled: "Not me being one of four bridesmaids in red dresses. Scandalous!"
