People 'feared the worst' when car roof cut off after crash

People "feared the worst" when they saw a roof cut off a car that had crashed into a van.

Bowring Park Road in Childwall was closed this evening, Sunday, May 21 following the crash. Emergency services including an air ambulance attended the scene at 6.36pm.

Residents on the road told the ECHO they had never seen such a large emergency service response. One man, who had been out walking his dog, said: "I didn’t see the crash but have never seen this many ambulances. There were at least four here on the road and the air ambulance landed on the King George V Playing Fields."

A small crowd gathered on the road to watch the emergency services in action. Children on bikes and families walking their dogs stopped at the edge of the cordon, while residents watched from their front windows.

Debris was littered across the road following the crash. The roof of the car had been cut off by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) and had been discarded on a grass verge by the side of the road.

A woman who lived on the road was returning home after a day out. She told the ECHO: "When you see that kind of damage you always fear the worst."

The ECHO understands six people were in the two vehicles - three in each. When MFRS arrived at the scene, around three minutes after the crash, one person had got out of the car while the other two were trapped inside by the impact of the crash.

North West Ambulance Service checked casualties over while fire crews stabilised both vehicles. Fire crews then removed the roof of the car using hydraulic cutters and the two remaining occupants were lifted out and taken to hospital.

One of the occupants of the van was also taken to hospital. Fire crews left the scene shortly after 8pm.

Bowring Park Road remains closed by Merseyside Police in all directions. Police officers remained at the scene to help with traffic management. Cars were turned around near the junctions with Gleneagles Road and Chelwood Avenue and told to find alternative routes.

The ECHO has approached Merseyside Police for comment.
