Joe Cole has defended Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount from recent criticism in an interview with YouTube channel Football Daily.
In response to a question over whether the 22-year-old receives unfair flack Cole said: “That’s the sign of the times in it, people don’t want to admit they were wrong." After picking up a second consecutive Chelsea player of the season award in May after winning his first in 2020/21, Mount has still faced backlash online.
"Anyone who’s not having Mason Mount needs to just really have a look at themselves."

Cole heaped further praise onto Mount when speaking on how he'd fair playing with his generation. "He's more rounded. If we had a time machine and you put all them great players and you took them out and them back in our era, Mason would be the one that adjusts quicker."
Despite Mount being widely supported by the Stamford Bridge faithful and being regarded as one of England's most promising young talents, the midfielder has been subject to persistent criticism and in worst cases, abuse, from sections of social media.
Mount has been one of the Blues' most consistent performers since breaking through under Frank Lampard in 2019. Quickly earning favour under Thomas Tuchel, scoring in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and playing to winning pass in the final to Kai Havertz. In 2021/22, Mount ended as Chelsea's top Premier League scorer with 11, gaining over 29 goal contributions in all competitions.
