People discover real reason your mother always warned you not to drink from bathroom tap and it's revolting

Most people's parents have warned them against drinking from the bathroom tap from a young age.

However, many would not think twice about quenching their thirst in the middle of the night without having to go all the way to the kitchen, as it couldn't be that bad for you, could it?

Well, the answer is it can. Experts have revealed that just one sip from a bathroom tap could be deadly, especially if you live in an old house.

Several health problems are linked to drinking water from the bathroom tap.

One issue stems from the disinfectant used to ensure drinking water is safe.

The chemicals used to treat drinking water and prevent bacteria growth can be destroyed when exposed to air which can happen in homes fitted with an old storage tank.

Old water storage tanks also may not have the right level of chemicals to keep bacteria at bay.

Not only this, but some homeowners have even reported opening up their storage tanks to find dead rats, mice and birds floating in the water.

Some older homes can contain lead piping, meaning the toxic material which was phased out in the 1970s could still be leaching out of the bathroom tap if it hasn't been upgraded.

Even if your bathroom water is safe to drink, experts have emphasised that you should still never drink from the hot tap.

Hot water is stored in tanks that are heated up and cooled down throughout the day, which can lead to bacteria like legionella growing.

The deadly bacteria caused the death of a dad on holiday in Malta last month when he took a dip in a hot tub filled with contaminated water.

Water firm The Water Professor also warned of the dangers, adding it's best to make an effort to go to the kitchen instead.

They told Yorkshire Live : "So, is it safe to drink tap water from the bathroom? Probably not.

"It's unlikely to kill you but the clean water from the cold tap in your kitchen is a far better option."
