People baffled after realising what the plastic pull tab on oil bottle lids is for

TikTok users have been left gobsmacked after they realised what the pull tab is actually for on a bottle of oil.

It's an everyday essential for cooking but sometimes you need a steady hand to try and stop it from pouring out without warning, drenching a frying pan.

But there is a trick to make sure you can pour the perfect amount and it's already part of the packaging.

As the Mirror writes, The ring pull that you remove from the bottle of oil actually has a purpose - to help you pour the oil out a lot more slowly than you could normally.

Taking to TikTok, Cooking Cards, showed people how to utilise the ring pull, rather than just throwing it in the bin.

He said: "Ah, don't you hate it when you're pouring oil and it makes a mess everywhere?

"Well, I do, and trust me, try this hack and you will thank me later."

He then proceeds to remove it as normal and turn it upside down, pushing it back into where the oil pours from.

This means there's enough space around the sides of the plastic tab so the oil can still pour out, but you'll be able to avoid pouring out half of the bottle.

In the comments, people were wondering how they hadn't realised the hack sooner, as they'd been overpouring for a long time.

One wrote: "Can't believe I did not know this", followed by some exasperated emojis.

Another commented: "Brilliant! I'll be using this!"

"I've lived my whole life not knowing this", someone else interjected.

"This is genius", a TikToker praised.
