People are only just discovering that they've been pronouncing Vimto wrong their entire life

Popular fruit drink Vimto first started brightening supermarket and store shelves more than 115 years ago in 1908 - with its unmissable purple branding and colour dazzling shoppers alike.

Full of flavours, the fizzy or still blackcurrant, grape and raspberry drink was originally launched as Vim Tonic, before later seeing a revamp under its current name.

It was invented by a Lancashire man named John Noel Nichols, but has since been turned into sweets and ice lollies too.

The Mirror reports that the drink remains one of the most popular brands on the British market competing with big names like Ribena and Robinson's, but some of us have been pronouncing it wrong for years. The company recently used a giant billboard to poke fun at the common mispronunciation, adding the letter 'p' into the name.

Beneath the rebranded name, the sign said: "Changing our name to Vimpto... seeing as you all pronounce it that way."

Vimto's billboard appeared in London's Piccadilly Circus sparking debate about how it's meant to be said, either as 'Vim-toe' or 'Vimp-toe', before becoming hotly debated online - with one user saying Vimto was 'so hard to say' while others said the change was 'wrong'.

Another user, said: "Trying to remember who it was who mocked me for saying this, but I've always pronounced it Vimpto, well here's some f****** vindication."

A third, added: "It was always Vimpto on my shopping list. I thought you were just righting a wrong!"

However others were happy with a Vimto supporter, saying: "'I'm glad you cleared this up, I was preparing to be upset. Team Vimto."

The company did clarify later that this was not an actual change but simply a fun publicity stunt.

All brands shift their logo over time and the latest rebrand for the fizzy fruit drink was back in 2021. The new design, according to Vimto, 'retains all of the brand's personality and heritage'.

The name, however, has not been changed since the 1900s when it was shortened. The Vimto website reads: "It started as 'Vimtonic' — a herbal tonic made to give people 'Vim & Vigour'."

Vimto adds: "Later, it became known as ‘Vimto’, and there are only a very small number of people in the world who know the secret recipe today!"

The brand's fun poke at the pronunciation comes after a recent advert by car manufacturer Hyundai, who also corrected the commonly mispronounced name. They clarified that it rather than the three syllable 'Hy-un-dai' we should be using 'Hyun-dai' which sounds like 'Sunday'.

Rather than a billboard, the advert had a Sat Nav taking drivers to similar sounding places as they repeatedly mispronounced the brand name when trying to get to the car dealer.
