An elderly man left his housemate's head pouring with blood after attacking him with a jar of gherkins.

Mr Stanton was rushed to hospital to have a 3cm head wound glued afterwards..

Caernarfon Crown Court heard how he had simply failed to close the patio door when Glover pounced.

The pair, who had a history of animosity between them, lived in a house of multiple occupancy with a communal kitchen.

When Glover finished his shift, he crouched by the fridge to put his shopping away with two bottles of wine on the kitchen counter.

The court heard that Mr Stanton walked through the kitchen and out through the patio doors but left them open.

Prosecutor Ember-Jade Wong described the defendant as "out of control" on the day of the incident last May.

Glover was handed a nine-month jail term, suspended for 12 months (Daily Post Wales)

Mr Stanton went to hospital and had to have a 3cm head wound glued.

Glover, of Pentre Broughton, Wrexham, denied unlawful wounding.

Instead, he claimed that he had been aggressive and that he was acting in self-defence while insisting that the jar of gherkins had not smashed.

But later, he admitted to causing unlawful wounding by inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and was handed a nine-month jail term, suspended for 12 months.

Simon Rogers, defending, said Glover had acted "out of character" and was remorseful.

He poses a low risk of re-offending.

The judge, Her Honour Nicola Saffman, told Glover: "After an altercation you punched the victim in the head, you hit him with a bottle of wine and repeatedly hit him with a jar of gherkins.

"You were shouting and swearing... and used two weapons."

Ms Saffman imposed the suspended sentence and a two-year restraining order prohibiting Glover from contacting Mr Stanton or from entering Poyser Street in Wrexham.

They no longer live in the same shared house.

Glover must also pay a £156 statutory surcharge.

A judge said he had used the items "as weapons" in the Wrexham incident.

But she also heard the offence was out of character and spared him jail.
