There was penalty shoot-out controversy in the FAI Junior Cup over the weekend as Ballinasloe Town beat Ballyheane FC on spot kicks.
Ballyheane were knocked out of the competition by Ballinasloe Town on penalties, with Ballinasloe emerging 8-7 winners from the shoot-out.
However, with the teams locked at 7-6 up in sudden death, a Ballinasloe player missed the decisive penalty which looked to have sent Ballyheane through.
But as the Mayo club's players celebrated, the referee ordered the penalty be re-taken on the grounds of the goalkeeper's foot leaving his line before the ball was struck.
When the shootout resumed, Ballinasloe went on to win 8-7, sparking anger from Ballinasloe management and players.
According to the rule book, a referee could only demand a penalty be retaken if the goalkeeper's foot leaving his line prematurely impacted on the kicker - and with the penalty being struck wide - there seems to be no basis for the spot kick to be re-taken.
The rule states: "If the ball misses the goal or rebounds from the crossbar or goalpost(s), the kick is only retaken if the goalkeeper's offence clearly impacted on the kicker."
After the game, Ballyheane assistant boss Joe Redmond claimed that the club will appeal the match result as he claimed his side were 'really annoyed' with the outcome.
"We're going to appeal this to the FAI. We are looking into all the rules to formulate our appeal correctly. This is no way for a tie to end. We're really annoyed about it."
"We had the game won officially - going by Law Fourteen of the Laws of The Game. The referee calling back the penalty saying Luca (Meldrum) had moved off his line was wrong. We have a video taken at the match showing he didn't," Redmond told Mayo News.
