Peanut allergy breakthrough as researchers find way to treat children’

  • A study indicates that feeding toddlers tiny amounts of peanuts could effectively treat their allergy within three years.
  • Researchers at Karolinska Institutet successfully treated children aged one to three with peanut allergies by gradually increasing their daily intake.
  • After three years, 82 per cent of the treated children could consume at least three and a half peanuts without an allergic reaction, even following a four-week break from treatment.
  • The treatment involved a slow up-dosing and a low maintenance dose, with peanut puffs proving easy for families to administer.
  • Experts emphasise that this treatment must be carried out under controlled conditions with healthcare professionals and should not be attempted at home due to the risk of serious reactions.
